Frequently asked questions

What is Twelve Elements Academy?

Twelve Elements Academy is an independent school from ages 9-20 located on a permaculture farm in Hamilton, MT. We aredevoted to cultivating a healthy learning environment that embraces each child’s unique learning abilities, no matter their background or age. We are a GroWise Be Well certified school and offer a full curriculum. We serve daily snacks and lunch that are organic, non-GMO, dairy-free, gluten-free and low glycemic.

What are courses like at GroWise Be Well Academy?

Our courses are experiential, kinesthetic, and holistic. Students master content through hands-on projects instead of listening to lectures. Our classrooms are mixed-age, partially child-driven, with a maximum of 12 students per classroom. We offer a full curriculum, yoga and meditation, synergistic classes, and after school clubs. School is on a year-round, trimester schedule, with the months of April, August, and December off. Classes are held Monday through Thursday, 8:30am to 4:00pm.

Is Twelve Elements Academy a Waldorf or Montessori school?

Twelve Elements Academy is neither a Montessori or Waldorf School. Unlike Montessori, we believe genius thrives on collaboration. Unlike Waldorf, we do not espouse anthroposophy and are more child-driven.

Do students receive grades at Twelve Elements Academy?

At Twelve Elements Academy, we don’t have textbooks, tests or grades. Instead, we offer a narrative-based transcript for our children to gauge their progress and to apply for secondary education. We reject the notion that a single letter grade per subject effectively illustrates the extent of student learning, and standardized testing assumes that every student is alike and does not account for individual strengths and weaknesses.

What is Narrative-Based Assessment?

Narrative based assessment includes students, parents, and teachers in the assessment process. This results in a qualitative document outlining student growth. The power of narrative based assessment is that it provides a complete picture of each student, rather than a single letter grade given based on individual subjects.

Why is the Academy gluten-free, dairy-free, organic, non-GMO, and low glycemic?

At Twelve Elements Academy we give children food their bodies need to help their genius thrive. Substantial scientific evidence indicates that the combination of gluten and dairy inflames learning and behavioral challenges. To make plants stronger against pests and disease the US has raised the gluten level in our wheat crops to an unnatural level so that our bodies are no longer capable of tolerating gluten in our grains in a healthy manner. Dairy is required to be pasteurized which kills everything good in milk. Artificial vitamins and minerals are then added back into the milk so that we can still perceive it as being a nutritional asset to our diet. Our bodies, however, don’t process the dead milk in a healthy manner. Genetically Modified Organisms (MGO) are being introduced into many foods available at the supermarket but there is no long-term testing of the introduction of e.coli and other diseases into the genetic code of plants and how it will affect our bodies. Organic food, or food without pesticides and chemicals, can feed the world without harm to our organic structures, as scientifically proven by the Rodale Institute.

How much is tuition at Twelve Elements Academy?

The full adjusted tuition price per student, per year is $10,500. A limited number of 50% off and full ride need-based scholarships are available. Tuition includes all fees and supplies; daily yoga, meditation, crystal journals, and guide word practice; foundational education in science, math, language arts, social studies, and foreign language; synergistic courses on fine arts, cooking, science, media arts, and theatre; daily organic, gluten-free, dairy-free and non-GMO snacks and lunch; all-day access to herbal tea, therapeutic essential oils, and crystals.
